Awesome! A fantastic mouthpiece at a great price.
I recently got back into playing the soprano and decided that this time around I would go all in and get some nice equipment, starting with a Yanagisawa S-WO2. I wasn’t sure what tip opening I would need for the mouthpiece, so I experimented with various cheap mouthpieces as well as different reed strengths. Once I found the combination that worked for me, it was time to find a proper mouthpiece. I’ve used other brand names in the past (including one that came with a jaw dropping price tag) but I had never experienced playing a JodyJazz mouthpiece. After learning more about them through the BetterSax website, I decided to give them a try.
I’ll sum up my experience by saying: “Wow!” The HR* Soprano 5* is free blowing, allowing me to easily play the entire range of the sax with ease. The sound is great, being a bit old fashioned and modern at the same time: slightly on the dark side but with hints of brightness. In other words, a very versatile mouthpiece. I’ve paired it with a Rovner ligature and some Hemke reeds and I am completely satisfied that what I’ve got is the best combination for me and my playing. And best of all, the JodyJazz HR* series costs a lot less than some of the other mouthpieces I was considering. And it’s made in the USA!
If you’ve never played a JodyJazz, it’s time to reconsider. With their trial period and easy returns you’ve got nothing to lose, and a lot to gain. I’m now looking into replacing my alto mouthpiece with a JodyJazz.
