EJ Hughes Biography

EJ Hughes is a professional saxophonist and woodwind instructor with over 35 years of performing and teaching experience. Hughes is trained in most modern forms of musical styles with major roots in jazz and improvisation. Hughes was awarded a tuition scholarship to Valdosta State University where he attended from 1989-1993, earning a degree in saxophone and clarinet performance with a primary focus on classical repertoire. EJ later earned a Master’s Degree from Georgia State University in jazz pedagogy in 2003 after living in New York City and Orlando, where he also studied privately with many notable music artists, gathering insights on jazz saxophone sound, technique, and harmony.

Starting his professional career at the age of 18, the now 52-year-old saxophonist has performed a variety of gigs spanning four decades, including at 19 years old with the Temptations, in his late 20s with Sam Rivers RivBea Orchestra, in his 30s with Grammy winner Speech/(Arrested Development), and in his 40s with Jennifer Holiday (Dream Girls), not to mention many award-winning professional bands while residing in the cities of New York, Orlando, Atlanta, and Singapore. As an educator, Hughes has taught privately throughout his career, including both as a university jazz saxophone lecturer and public school band director. Currently, EJ is employed at both Singapore Raffles Music College and Flute and Music Academy (FAMA), teaching modules and private lessons. He has also worked as a sideman with many Singapore artists, including Jordan Wei, Alemay Fernandex, Aya Sekine, Richard Jackson, Yvette Atienza, The Blue Monks, The Matrix group, Kelvin Ng, Rachma Lim Fellowship, Amanda Lee Swingtet, Phenyl Trio, Jjan Jazz night trio, Ywenna and Sheena Trio, Michelle Chua, Pricilla Tan, Transitions Jazz Group, Arnotld Pontoh Quintet, and Omniform led by Greg Lyons. Hughes has been performing in venues such as Maduro, Blujaz, JJan Korean Fusion, Cool Cats, Simply Jazz, The Esplanade Outdoor Theater, and the Grand Copthorne, among others.
